Area students teamed up to say “thanks” to the men and women who have served the United States military in observance of Veteran's Day.
At Humble High School, the Fifth Annual Wildcat Salute to Veterans was held on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The event drew together JROTC cadets, teachers and other students in a tribute to the military.
In the morning, students served breakfast to local veterans and presented them with boutonnieres before beginning a honorary program.
The JROTC cadets re-enacted traditional military displays observed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, attended as a guest speaker.
The school and Poe were presented with U.S. flags that have flown in Afghanistan – a special gift from Lt. Col. Robert Rohm, who had directed the Humble High School ROTC until he was deployed in 2008.
Other Humble High School students who participated in the event included the Key Club, choir, American Sign Language class, Christian Student Union and class officers.
New Caney High School students held their Second Annual Soaring Eagle Battalion Veteran's Day Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at New Caney High School, 21650 Loop 494.
The event began at 6:45 a.m. with a parade, mock 21-gun salute, and wreath-laying. The high school band played Taps.
On Thursday, Nov. 12, veterans joioned their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews during lunch time at various NCISD campuses for a free lunch.
