Entering Lone Star College-Kingwood in 2007, Andrew Robinson only wanted to think about one thing: getting his associates degree and attending the University of Houston. His thought was soon interrupted as he became involved in programs and organizations around campus, notably the Ambassador Program.
“I did not want to get involved in anything including the Ambassador Program at first because, I was only thinking about what classes I needed to take to get my degree and move on to U of H,” Robinson said. “I was asked to be a part of the program by Diane Blanco because she believed I could do it.”
As a student ambassador, Robinson gave campus tours and spearheaded the college’s “We Spiked Ike” program. He also participated and worked at various community and campus events such as the annual Heartwalk, held at LSC-Kingwood, and the 2007 Star Gala at the Humble Civic Center. Being an ambassador helped the student to gain confidence in being himself.
“The program dragged me out of my shell and allowed me to have the ability to believe and express myself. I am truly glad that I was a part of the program,” he said.
Robinson will use what he learned in the Ambassador Program along what he is learning at University of Houston to work as a paid intern at Walt Disney World in Florida. The internship, which begins Feb. 6, will allow the student to work at one of the resorts for six months to gain experience on how to run a hotel/restaurant. His goal is to one day be a director of a spa or general manager of a hotel.
“The internship at Walt Disney World is very popular in the Hilton College at University of Houston. After researching the program, I chose to apply because they want their employees to get involved in the community, work hard and they help employees enhance their personal growth,” Robinson said. “I am excited about the opportunity to be an intern there because not only will I be able to work at a resort and gain knowledge of the industry, I will also take free classes that will help me to develop myself even more in the business. I am also excited about all of the friends from all over the country and the world that I will make.”
Robinson is a 2007 graduate of Kingwood High School. He earned his general associate’s degree from LSC-Kingwood in May 2009 and is working to earn his bachelor’s degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management from University of Houston in 2011. He is a member of U of H’s Hilton College Ambassador Program.
