Kingwood Medical Center celebrates 500th open-heart surgery
published Jun. 29, 2012
The Kingwood Medical Center successfully completed its 500th open-heart surgery on 79-year-old Harris County resident Trinidad P. Avalos.
When Avalos began feeling sudden cardiac pains, his daughter drove him to Kingwood’s emergency room. Upon his arrival, Dr. Rick Ganim began tests, eventually discovering a 90 percent blockage in Avalos’s coronary arteries and performing a triple bypass.
“I am very thankful for all the incredible doctors and nurses taking care of me," said Avalos. "I feel like I won the lottery with all the attention I have been receiving after this surgery.”
KMC’s open-heart program began in November 2007 with the aid of Dr. Maniscalco, formerly at Baylor College of Medicine. Today, Maniscalco has joined with Dr. John Davis, formerly of Texas Heart Institute. They have performed, on average, 150 heart surgeries each year.
“Our cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to educate patients and help them understand the correct way to exercise, cope with their disease, return to a full and productive life and recover faster,” said Ginger Burklow, RN, cardiac rehabilitation coordinator. “[Our] program[s] also offer much-needed support after experiencing the emotional impact of heart disease and surgery.”
