Kingwood Roundup: Kingwood harriers don't miss a beat

Kingwood landed in the same district as The Woodlands last year, complicating its status in several sports. The Mustangs harriers finished ahead of the vaunted Highlanders in the final team standings at the District 14-5A meet last season, giving them an impressive 18th consecutive district championship. Despite finishing behind the Mustangs at the district and regional levels - the Mustangs won the Region II-5A team title - the Highlanders went on to win their fifth consecutive 5A state championship. The Mustangs had some extenuating circumstances that cost them dearly, sending them to a fifth-place finish. The Kingwood girls cross country team claimed the varsity gold championship at the Humble ISD Region III Preview at Atascocita. The Lady Mustangs placed four runners in the top 10 and six in the top 15 en route to scoring 30 points. Summer Creek earned positive reviews during its inaugural varsity season last year, going 3-7 with a win over Magnolia, but nobody could have predicted so much improvement after one offseason. The Bulldogs won their District 18-4A opener last week to improve to 4-0 on the season and keep them at No. 10 in the Chronicle's Class 4A rankings.
