The Humble Independent School District received a grant worth nearly $3 million to fund the purchase of 27 propane-fueled school buses as part of the 2011 Clean Fleet Technologies Conference: Fueling the Choice, a conference hosted by the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

Texas Railroad Commissioner David Porter presented a check for $2,925,184.30 to Charles Cunningham, Humble ISD’s Board of Trustees vice president on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The funding came from the Texas Railroad Commission, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and the Texas Parent Teacher Association.

According to a press release, the propane-fueled buses reduce exposure to diesel exhaust for children and emit less air pollution. The release also states that the district will save about $75,000 per year by using the new buses.

The conference also featured talks by Humble Mayor Donald McMannes, Porter, Rep. Dan Huberty and Dan Cassler, professor at the University of Houston.
