Family Lawyer Celia A. Brown Gives Overview on Alimony Payments
Divorce is a very complicated process, especially when it comes to issues such as child custody, child support, property division and alimony. The latter can be very tricky, as the question is raised as to why one spouse should support the other and how much. Since each case is unique, alimony - or payment given by one spouse to the other when they divorce, as ordered by the court - can only be determined based on the divorcing couple's situation. Celia A. Brown, a family lawyer who specializes in divorce and child custody, explains that there are different types of alimony a that husband and wife can settle on.
"Indirect alimony includes making such payments as medical or life insurance, or making mortgage payments," Brown said.
Other types include: lump-sum alimony, where one spouse is awarded a lump-sum payment if he or she does not want to receive anything of monetary value from the marriage; reimbursement alimony, where one spouse is reimbursed for any expenses he or she shouldered while supporting the other to achieve higher education, training or other certification; rehabilitative alimony, where one spouse is given support for a fixed period in order to find a job or to improve his or her employment skills; and temporary alimony, which is payment made while the case is proceeding but not yet finalized.
Permanent alimony, the most well-known alimony, is a regular payment made after the divorce is finalized. As alimony is flexible, the court may change the amount and frequency or abolish it altogether, based on the situation or circumstances of either or both parties.
It takes an experienced and dedicated divorce lawyer to determine which alimony payment works best and to make sure that a fair and reasonable resolution is achieved in the client's best interest. Clients can seek the advice of Brown, who studies each case carefully and treats each one as a unique situation worthy of her personal and full attention.
